Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic and public speaking event organizer. She is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and commentary on gender representations in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. She is the author as well as the executive director for Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit site that examines the representation of women within popular cultural narratives. Determined to challenge the assumptions associated with women in popular culture, she is also working to raise issues related to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of people in the online area. Sarkeesian, who holds the degree of Master's in Social and Political Thought at York University, is also well-known as a sought-after public presenter. She has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by questions of gender identity as well as feminist thought. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. The site was about to launch a series of web videos examining the female representation in video games and was the target of harassment online. The attack did hinder her, instead it only bolstered her determination as a feminist critic of media. Her work has earned her numerous awards for her numerous important contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women within pop culture narratives.
